What is Howard Stern’s Net Worth and Salary?

With a net worth of $650 million, Howard Stern stands as a prominent American radio and television personality. Known as the first “shock jock” to gain widespread popularity, Stern began to shape his unique style of radio hosting in the late 70s and early 80s, primarily with rock stations and talk shows. Despite being recognized for his “total honesty” on air early in his career—leading to numerous awards—this approach did not necessarily translate into higher pay or a consistent viewership. After moving from station to station for several years, he eventually secured a position with WNBC in Washington, D.C. His contentious relationship with the station, coupled with his increasingly provocative segments, propelled him into the national limelight. Ultimately, after being fired by the station’s management, he left behind the highest-rated show at WNBC.

From the mid-1980s until the early 2000s, his radio show reigned as the top morning program in the nation. Stern expanded his brand by launching two late-night talk shows, producing two best-selling books, participating in multiple pay-per-view events, and releasing successful albums. He even made a run for Governor of New York. “The Howard Stern Show” was nationally syndicated from 1986 to 2005. On December 16, 2005, Stern departed from “regular” radio, signing a substantial five-year $500 million contract with Sirius Satellite Radio. His Sirius show premiered on January 9, 2006. Since then, he has accrued well over $1 billion from Sirius alone, not to mention the hundreds of millions amassed during his time on traditional radio.

On December 9, 2020, news broke that Howard had entered a five-year extension with Sirius, valued at approximately $120 million annually, totaling around $600 million.

It is important to note that while Howard’s “earnings” are cited at $120 million per year, these funds are allocated to cover production expenses for his show, which includes salaries for notable staff members such as Robin Quivers and Gary Dell’Abate. Estimates suggest that Robin and Gary earn around $10 million and $4 million per year, respectively, adding up to $14 million. Assuming a conservative estimate of an additional $10-15 million for other expenses, Howard’s personal take-home would be roughly $90 million before accounting for taxes and agent fees. Agents typically retain about 10%, reducing that figure to around $80 million. Following taxes, which could consume about half, Howard’s net income would rest at approximately $40 million each year.

If Howard continues his current schedule of producing three new shows weekly, equating to nearly 40 weeks per year, this results in around 120 shows each year. By dividing $40 million in net earnings by 120 shows, Howard Stern effectively earns $333,333 per broadcast. Essentially, it’s like receiving the value of a brand-new Ferrari with every show he airs.

Early Life

Born on January 12, 1954, Howard Allan Stern grew up in the Jackson Heights neighborhood of Queens, New York City. His mother Ray worked as an office clerk, while his father, a World War II veteran, later became a radio engineer for WHOM in Manhattan. He was

Howard Stern is also a co-owner of Aura Recording, Inc., a recording studio situated in Manhattan known for producing commercials and cartoons. He has an elder sister named Ellen. At the age of one, Stern’s family relocated to Long Island, New York.

From the age of five, Stern aspired to work in the radio industry. His father created a makeshift recording studio in their basement in Roosevelt, New York, enabling Stern to record imaginary radio shows. He attended Roosevelt Junior-Senior High School, and at the age of 15, his family moved to Rockville Center, New York. He then registered at South Side High School for the 1969-70 academic year and graduated high school in 1972, subsequently enrolling at Boston University that fall.

During his college days, he began working at the college radio station WTBU, starting in his sophomore year. In 1974, he gained admission to Boston University’s School of Public Communications. Stern graduated magna cum laude from Boston University in May 1976.

Early Career

Between 1976 and 1982, Stern hosted the morning show at WRNW in Briarcliff Manor, New York, WCCC in Hartford, Connecticut, WWWW in Detroit, Michigan, and WWDC in Washington, D.C., where he crafted his on-air persona.

Success

From 1982 until 1985, Stern worked the afternoon shift at WNBC in New York City. He began a 20-year tenure at WXRK in New York City starting in 1985. By 1986, his morning show was syndicated in 60 markets, reaching an audience of 20 million listeners.

He made history as the first individual to have the number one show simultaneously in both New York City and Los Angeles.

Private Parts

In 1993, Stern entered into a $1 million agreement with Simon & Schuster to pen his memoir titled “Private Parts.” Released in October 1993, the book quickly became a bestseller. The initial print run of 225,000 copies sold out within hours of its launch. Within five days, “Private Parts” became the fastest-selling book in Simon & Schuster’s history, debuting at #1 on the “New York Times” Best-Seller list and remaining on the list for 20 weeks.

The film adaptation of Stern’s “Private Parts” premiered in theaters in 1997. Stern and several members of his radio show cast, such as Robin Quivers, Fed Norris, Gary Dell’Abate, and Jackie Martling, portrayed themselves in the movie. The film was released in the U.S. on March 7, 1997, and topped the U.S. box office during its opening weekend, earning $14.6 million. By the end of its theatrical run, it grossed a total of $41.2 million domestically.

Other Work

Additionally, Stern authored “Miss America” in 1995 and “Howard Stern Comes Again” in 2019.

In 2011, he revealed his role as Piers Morgan’s replacement on “America’s Got Talent” for its seventh season. He remained a judge on the show for the eighth, ninth, and tenth seasons, departing at the conclusion of the 10th season in September 2015.

Howard Stern Salary and Contracts

Before

When Stern joined Sirius, the satellite platform had 600,000 subscribers and was facing annual losses of $226 million against revenues of only $13 million. Currently, the combined SiriusXM service boasts 35 million paying subscribers and produces $1.8 billion in profits from $7.2 billion in revenue. On Sirius, Howard enjoys the privilege of total uncensored free speech, beyond the control of the FCC. Analysts estimate that 10-15% of Sirius customers subscribe solely for Stern’s content.

In 2004, Stern secured a five-year contract with Sirius worth $500 million, making him one of the highest-paid figures in radio. This agreement effectively provided Stern with $100 million annually, which included $80 million in cash and $20 million in stock. The entire $100 million amount also encompassed his show’s production expenses, such as staff salaries, with estimates suggesting Stern retained about $50 million for personal use. Before signing with Sirius, Stern earned $30 million per year while at Viacom, broadcasting on terrestrial radio.

In 2010, he extended his contract for another five years with a similar $500 million agreement. December 2015 saw him signing a new 12-year deal with Sirius, reportedly worth $80 million annually, which accounts for his salary, production costs, and staff salaries. When this latest deal concludes, it is anticipated that Stern will have earned over $1 billion (excluding production costs) in salary throughout his tenure at Sirius, in addition to several hundred million dollars (pre-tax) from terrestrial radio prior to 2005.

On December 9, 2020, Howard announced he had signed a five-year contract extension with Sirius valued at $600 million, translating to $120 million to cover all associated production expenses.

Personal Life

Stern first crossed paths with Alison Berns through a mutual friend during his studies at Boston University. They tied the knot on June 4, 1978, in Brookline, Massachusetts, both at the age of 24. The couple has three daughters: Emily Beth (1983), Debra Jennifer (1986), and Ashley Jade (1993). They separated in October 1999, and their divorce concluded amicably in 2001.

In the months that followed his separation from Alison and prior to meeting Beth Ostrosky, Stern was involved with model Angie Everhart and actress Robin Givens. His relationship with model and television host Ostrosky began in 2000, leading to their engagement on February 14, 2007, and their wedding on October 3, 2008, at Le Cirque restaurant in New York City.

Stern earned the title of the most fined radio host in history after the FCC imposed fines totaling $2.5 million on station owners for content deemed indecent.

He has been open about suffering from obsessive-compulsive disorder, discussing his battle with the condition in his 1995 book “Miss America.” To manage his OCD, Stern practices Transcendental Meditation, a technique his parents have used since the early 1970s.

In 2012, he adopted a pescetarian diet.

As supporters of the North Shore Animal League of America, Stern and Ostrosky have fostered nearly 900 cats together. They currently share their home with four cats: Bella, Yoda, Walter, and Pebble.

In June 2022, Stern indicated a willingness to run for President of the United States in 2024 if Donald Trump becomes the Republican nominee once again.

Real

Estate

Stern purchased a 4,000-square-foot apartment on the 54th floor of the Millennium Tower, located on Manhattan’s Upper West Side, for $4.9 million in 1998. Subsequently, he acquired the adjacent 1,011-square-foot unit for $5.75 million. In 2008, he invested $15.1 million in two apartments situated just beneath his 4,011-square-foot penthouse on the 53rd floor, adding another 2,546 square feet of space to his holdings.

In 2005, Stern acquired an empty lot in Southhampton, New York, for $20 million, where he then commissioned the construction of a large custom mansion.

In 2013, he purchased a 12-bedroom mansion on 3.25 oceanfront acres in Palm Beach, Florida, for $52 million. This property features multiple structures totaling approximately 40,000 square feet, with the main mansion measuring just under 19,000 square feet. Notable features include stunning columns, beautifully manicured grounds, a wall designed to prevent ocean water from intruding onto the lawn, and an exquisite pool nestled within the estate.

In April 2023, the neighboring property adjacent to Howard’s Palm Beach estate was sold for a record-breaking $170 million. The seller, Bob Stiller, amassed his wealth through Keurig coffee pods. Stiller’s $170 million estate is approximately half the size of Howard’s property in terms of both square footage and acreage. This comparison leads to a valuation argument suggesting that Howard’s Palm Beach mansion could be worth at least $300 million.
