Following his parents’ divorce at the age of seven, he relocated to St. Louis, Missouri. During his teenage years, Nelly, alongside friends Ali, Murphy Lee, Kyjuan, Slo’Down, and half-brother City Spud, formed his initial band, the St. Lunatics. The group achieved local fame in 1997 with their single “Gimme What Ya Got.” After facing challenges in securing a record deal for the St. Lunatics, Nelly opted to pursue a solo career.

In April 2015, the Tennessee Highway Patrol stopped Nelly’s tour bus after an officer reported smelling marijuana. Following a search, officers discovered marijuana, drug paraphernalia, several handguns, and a substance they suspected to be meth. Nelly was arrested and taken into custody but was later released on bail. He faced charges including felony drug possession and other minor offenses; however, the felony charge was dismissed upon confirmation that the substance was not meth. In December 2015, Nelly pled guilty to misdemeanor possession of marijuana and drug paraphernalia.

In 2016, the IRS filed a $2.4 million tax lien against Nelly due to unpaid taxes.

In the fall of 2017, Nelly was apprehended near Seattle on suspicion of rape after a woman accused him of inviting her onto his tour bus and allegedly assaulting her. He was booked into jail but subsequently released, and the charges were later dropped.
