Early Life

Born on April 1, 1961, in Blackburn, West Lothian, Scotland, Susan Magdalane Boyle is the youngest of nine siblings, including four brothers and four sisters. Her father, Patrick, a WWII veteran and miner, and her mother, Bridget, who worked as a shorthand typist, had a significant impact on her early life. Patrick also occasionally performed as a singer at a place called the Bishop’s Blaize. Throughout her childhood, Boyle faced bullying and struggled academically due to what was initially believed to be a learning disability, a result of complications during birth. It was later revealed that she had been misdiagnosed and actually has Asperger syndrome, along with an “above average” IQ. Although she found school challenging and achieved few qualifications, she pursued singing through lessons from vocal coach Fred O’Neil and attended Edinburgh Acting School.

Career

In 1998, using her personal savings, Boyle created a professionally produced demo to send to record labels, radio competitions, and local as well as national television programs. This demo featured her performances of “Cry Me a River,” “Killing Me Softly,” and “Don’t Cry for Me Argentina.” Many of these songs were later shared online following her audition for “Britain’s Got Talent.” One of her earlier contributions that gained attention was her rendition of “Cry Me a River,” which appeared on the CD “Music for a Millennium Celebration, Sounds of West Lothian,” produced in 1999.

Following her victories in several singing contests, Boyle’s mother encouraged her to audition for “Britain’s Got Talent.” She had previously considered auditioning for “The X Factor” but felt that the selection favored appearance over talent, leading her to believe she wouldn’t stand a chance. She nearly backed out of her audition for “Britain’s Got Talent” as well, but was persuaded by her former singing coach O’Neil to continue.
